Dr Vera Bekes, PhD
“The therapy with Dr Bekes was very helpful for me, she helped me a great deal going through a difficult period in my life. She really listened to me, took my problems seriously and helped me understand my feelings and finding my way out in just a few sessions. She is very knowledgeable and caring, I felt understood and supported. I highly recommend her!”
“I saw Dr. Bekes 4 times over a period of about a month and a half, for help with ongoing issues of obsessions and compulsions. Her approach was a bit different from other therapists I have seen, and I mean that in a very good way. She got me talking about the issues that I obsess over, and asked lots of questions – in a sense, challenging me to think about what bothered me about these issues, and to realize what it is that might be causing my reactions. I found it very helpful, and I strongly recommend Dr. Bekes to anyone with similar OCD-type issues.”
“Dr. Bekes helped me control my anger bursts and helped identify why and where I am experiencing these emotions. I had doubts about therapy in general but Dr. Bekes proved me wrong. She helped me connect the dots and understand that everything is related to our present and future. She has a very special way in asking just the right questions and help you figure out the answers. Moreover she supported me with the tools that would help me post therapy and keep me steadfast. She’s very punctual and accommodating, and I was more than happy to post this review.”
“I saw Dr. Bekes during my short 5-week stay in Montreal, but she managed our time very well. She pinpointed the issues we could realistically tackle together in that time and offered support, insight and creative solutions. She validated me and never posed judgment or doubt on what I told her. She also provided me with literature so I could continue learning and working outside of therapy. Overall, I had a very positive experience with Dr. Bekes.”

University-level Training in Psychology:
Trained in Scientifically-Based Treatment Approaches:
Specialized Training for the Treatment of:
Qualified to Practice Psychotherapy
I have an international background; I completed my doctoral and postdoctoral psychology trainings in Hungary, Israel and Canada. I have worked in various clinical settings, such as in hospitals (e.g. the Jewish General Hospital) and in private practice.
I am specialized in the treatment of trauma, anxiety, depression, and perfectionism. I have a strong research background related to these conditions as well: I have published several papers in peer-reviewed journals about their treatment and the process of psychotherapy. I am especially interested in the psychological consequences of individual and massive trauma, and their passing through the next generation; I published a book, a book chapter and several papers about it. My research has been supported by several grants, recently from the Douglas Utting Foundation, the Society for Psychotherapy Research, the J. & O. Winter Fund at the City University of New York. I regularly present my research about the treatment of depression, perfectionism and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at local and international conferences and public lectures.
I have more than ten years of experience in treating various psychological problems. I have worked with people struggling with all kinds of difficulties: the hunting memories of trauma, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, life crisis, grief, and so much more. Life can feel hard, demanding and unfair, and I know how isolated one can feel when facing the hardships. I believe that although each problem and life situation is unique, we all have the ability to share our journey, show our vulnerability and get help and support in a safe and honest relation. In therapy I offer this warm, open and respectful space needed to heal and grow. I believe that, as Irvin Yalom puts it, „We are all in this together, and there is no therapist and no person immune to the inherent tragedies of existence”, and that seeking support to deal with difficulties means the first step in solving them. I use the most effective therapeutic tools to help you to cope better, communicate more effectively, accept yourself, get over the problems that hold you back, and grow as a person.
