Alyssa Mew, MSW

I was referred to Alyssa by a friend who raved about her. I was going through a lot of anxiety and depression and felt extremely shy and uncomfortable in social situations. I was having problems at work and also having serious marital issues at home. It was becoming a real burden in an extremely unhappy life. Then my friend recommended Alyssa. I found her extremely qualified and that gave me confidence right off the bat. Alyssa showed me a lot of very genuine caring, compassion, and understanding. This in turn, enabled me to confide a lot of personal information and also very effectively work through the issues bothering me. In fact I found Alyssa very good at helping me get to the heart of the matter and helping me work through and eventually solve my problems. I’m now much happier, doing well at work, and my marriage is back on track. No matter what your problem is, I would have no hesitation to recommend Alyssa Mew to anyone who needs psychotherapy help. She’s an absolute gem!

Alyssa really works with you to reach your end goals, together you find what works and what doesn’t. What made her so beneficial to me was that she really made me help myself, I thought I would spend the rest of my life seeing a therapist, but she doesn’t want that. She wants you to learn the tools to help yourself, but she is there as support the entire way.

I was very nervous about the idea of being in therapy but Alyssa put me at ease right away. She was friendly and warm, and that made it easier for me to open up about things I used to be very ashamed of. I deal with the challenges I face differently now and people have noticed that I seem happier and less stressed! I can’t recommend her enough.

Alyssa’s practice focuses on addiction, depression, anxiety and interpersonal problems.  With extensive experience in the public and private sectors, she uses an integrative approach and evidence-based practices including cognitive and dialectical behaviour therapy (CBT and DBT).  Because effective therapy requires a relationship of trust and respect, Alyssa works collaboratively with clients to identify behaviours they wish to change and to help them manage triggers that precipitate emotional challenges.  Alyssa’s approach incorporates the twin concepts of mindfulness and acceptance in recognition of their demonstrated effectiveness in mitigating anxiety.  She is ever attuned to her clients’ concerns and tailors her interventions to meet their changing needs.

During graduate studies at McGill University, Alyssa trained in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry developing a variety of approaches to counselling children, adolescents and their families.  From 2011-2013, while working as a psychotherapist, she also held the position of Clinical Program Advisor at CRD Foster, an accredited and lauded addiction centre.  She continues to develop her expertise with couples and families in the context of a postgraduate certificate in Couple and Family Therapy associated with the Jewish General Hospital.

Alyssa is a member of Quebec’s Professional Order of Social Workers and Couple and Family Therapists (OTSTCFQ) as well as Quebec’s Order of Psychologists (OPQ) as an accredited psychotherapist.
